Bush to possibly deploy the National Guard to protect US border

The AP released an article today basically saying that President Bush is weighing the idea of deploying the National Guard to guard the US / Mexico border. This comes at talks heat up about reforming US immigration laws. The article also states that as many as 10,000 troops would be used. The president is supposed to address the nation from the Oval Office on Monday at 8:30… just in time to cause the TV networks problems with season finales.

  1. What do you think about this? Is it too late or overkill? What are your ideas for immigration reform?

  2. Bush has finally done something to get the Conservative Republicans on his side again, as long as he doesn’t mention anything about amnesty for illegals, his poll numbers should go back up. The far right wing will vote Democrat if they don’t get what they want, control of the borders. He is being more responsive to the public, maybe at the advise of his new press secretary Tony Snow. Illegal immigration is the main topic of talk radio shows in California, New Mexico, and Arizona.

  4. Hell will freeze over before the far right wing will vote for a Democrat. That was obvious in 2004. As for Bush’s speech. What are we going to do, wrap the country in a bubble to solve this perplexing problem? There’s 5500 miles of border on the Canada side. The national guard is already involved in 2 wars overseas. Where are we going to get the troops? Bush did not mention how any of this would be paid for. Will the Republicans raise taxes or just print more money? If we take more National Guardsmen off their jobs, won’t we need more Mexicans to take their place? Okay, that was mean.
The point is that the immigration problem will only be fixed when the illegal Mexicans comply. Since they have never complied to our immigration laws before, what would possess them to listen to our government now. This is like the Iraq situation, trillions will be spent, but nothing will be solved.
I say that if Bush can force the Mexican president to veto drug legislation that the Mexican congress passed, he should force Mexico to get tough on immigration. Mexicans have an obligation to make their country livable. Currently many Mexicans living here still vote in Mexico.
If an American is caught sneaking into Mexico, he is thrown in jail. If a Mexican is caught sneaking into the United States he is given supper and a ticket back to Mexico. That’s what has to stop. If the Mexican has got a buck, we will even let him play the lottery on the way back. We should treat them as they treat us. The 15% that sneak in to the country that are not from Mexico worry me the most. That is the main reason that we have to stop illegal immigration.
Newt Gingrich said on Meet the Press this weekend that it makes no sense to reward people for breaking the law. Bush wants the long time lawbreakers to pay a fine and stay. That sends the wrong message.
If we don’t do something about healthcare Americans will be sneaking into Canada for prescription drugs. Oh wait a minute, we are already doing that. The rest of the planet must be laughing their asses off.

  5. News with views printed this letter and I believe it sums up most Americans point of view.

MR. PRESIDENT, I’M HEADED TO MEXICO

    David M. Bresnahan
    April 1, 2006
    NewsWithViews.com

    Dear President Bush:

I’m planning a little trip with my family and extended family, and
I’d like to ask you to assist me. I’m going to walk across the
border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements.
I know you can help with this.

I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration
quotas and laws. I’m sure they handle those things the same way you do
    here.

So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Vicente
Fox, that I’m on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting
    the following:

    1. Free medical care for my entire family, and free education for my children.

    2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might
need, whether I use them or not.

    3. All government forms need to be printed in English.

    4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.

    5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.

    6. I ‘d like my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the
flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.

    7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

    8. I’ll need a local Mexican driver’s license so I can get easy
    access to government services.

    9. If I change my mind and decide to drive us across, we’ll be in our old
Ford station wagon with rusted out fenders and a broken windshield.
I don’t plan to have any car insurance, and I won’t make any effort
    to learn local traffic laws.

    10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo
from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police
    officers speak English.

    11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put flag decals on
my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any
complaints or negative comments from the locals.

    12. I would also like to have a job without paying any taxes, and
don’t enforce any labor or tax laws.

    13. Please tell all the people in the country to be nice and to never
say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place on
the social infrastructure or the tax base.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things
for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure that
Pres. Fox won’t mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

However, if he gives you any trouble, just invite him to go quail
    hunting with your V.P.

Thank you so much for your kind help.

    Sincerely,

    David M. Bresnahan

  6. I have nothing wrong with immigrants. As long as they are legal. It gets me how they go marching around claiming that they are illegal immigrants and they have rights. Last time I checked, illegal meant that you are not legal. When you are illegal, you should have no rights. In one sense, an illegal immigrant is no different than any other prisoner. They both have broken the law, and they both should pay the price.

No I do not like Bush’s proposal, but I will settle for it because it is better than what we have now. It may sound in-humane, but why not build a wall, put automatic guns on it, and shoot anyone who tries to cross it. That would settle most of it.

How is Bush going to pay for this? Probably taxes, but I think that it should be funded by the illegals. They are going to have to pay a fine if they are here already… make it a hefty one to pay for the new system. Charge them to come into the country legally. If we got all illegals that are here now to pay taxes, there would be a lot more taxes paid into the system.

  7. The real problem is the Chinese and Arabic being spoken at the border. It’s been 5 years since 9-11 and nothing has been done to stop the flood of illegals. Bush’s proposal only went far enough not upset the amnesty liberal democrats, but not far enough to satisfy the law and order Conservative Republicans that first drew attention to the border issue last December. Bush should send 15,000 National Guardsmen to the border. There are thousands more police just in NY City. The last time we had the national Guard at the Mexican border, was to chase Poncho Via in 1916. If we do build 1,952 miles of wall, what’s to stop the terrorists from crossing over the Canadian border? We should build a wall there, too. Our Interstate highways have more sound barrier walls than we would need to secure the borders. Now that the war in Iraq is winding down and the Iraqi military is controlling the majority of the territory, well trained U.S. combat veterans will be a great asset to border control agents who are grateful to get the extra help.

  8. The key to keeping Mexicans in Mexico is not giving them jobs when they get here. Wal-Mart’s “obligation” to increase their profit line for their stockholders is the reason they keep coming. We all know that Case farms hires them here in Burke County for years, yet the government has turned their heads away from the greedy business owners who cause the problem.
As for blaming the Democrats, I find that ironic since the wealthy Republicans are the ones that have profited all these years from the hispanic presence. Why do you think Bush has sat on his ass doing nothing about this for 5 years? I say it is because he didn’t want to upset his base. But really, it’s not about politics as much as it is about greed. Even the Catholics are in on the greed game. More mexicans equal increased membership which increases revenue.
And as for the National Guard, turns out they won’t actually patrol the borders, just push paper and create more red tape.

  9. The Democrats have rendered the laws we have on the books impotent. We are not allowed to ask someone if they are a U.S. citizen because it might violate someone’s civil rights. Are you aware that the ACLU was founded by the Communist Party.
What’s wrong with being greedy? There is a difference between being economically competitive and being a criminal by hiring illegals. The government has been cracking down on Wal-Mart and others lately for hiring illegals, thanks to the national attention that the Conservatives have drawn to the illegal immigrant issue.
National Guard or military can’t engage in law enforcement, but they can do what the minute men are already doing and more.

    Comment by Gunner | May 17, 2006 | Reply

  10. If you don’t know what’s wrong with being greedy then I will never convince you of anything. If you hire illegal immigrants to become competitive, you have broken the law. You should be punished for allowing your greed to overtake your common sense. Get back with me in about a year and I will accept your apology regarding the effectiveness of the National Guard on our borders. Wishful thinking on your and Bush’s part at best. If Bush had his way the borders would be wide open. That’s what the first Bush envisioned when encouraging NAFTA as a way of life.
Following his election in 2000, Mexican president Vicente Fox told an audience in California that his government would “use all our persuasion and all our talent to bring together the U.S., Canadian and Mexican governments so that in five or ten years, the border is totally open to the free movement of workers.” Fox was similarly candid in a 2002 address to an audience in Madrid: “Eventually, our long-range objective is to establish with the United States, but also with Canada, our other regional partner, an ensemble of connections and institutions similar to those created by the European Union.”

The actions and statements of some U.S. politicians have been similarly telling. The Bush administration’s proposed “guest worker” program, which is amnesty for illegal immigrants, is a key part of this trinational integration scheme.

Many of President Bush’s staunch conservative supporters, who see him as a flinty-eyed custodian of our national security, are puzzled over what they see as his uncharacteristic squishiness on the issue of protecting our borders. They don’t understand that George W. Bush has long been a proponent of amalgamating the United States with Mexico, and is an unabashed proponent of regional integration as well.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was told by advisers in 2004 that a proposed tax incentive package encouraging Californian road builders to recycle 32 million used tires from California’s vehicles would violate NAFTA rules by favoring American recyclers over those of Mexico and Canada. Schwarzenegger dutifully vetoed the bill.
The U.S. and Mexico are separated by language and have fundamentally incompatible political systems. If we don’t get serious about the hemmorraging and quit trying to put a bandaid on it we will soon be a third world country. You want to make this a political issue and it will be more of the same finger pointing come election time. But your party has been in charge for a while now. As for you Gunner, I don’t think you will ever grow up. But at some point the Republican party will have to grow up and take responsibility for their own actions.

  12. BB, Seems we agree about far more than you know, yet you still seem to be anti-American at times. I can’t figure you out. Sometimes I think you’re a Left Wing Liberal/Communist, then today you quote from the Conservative website of The John Birch Society. You take the side of the enemies of our country by putting down the effectiveness of our National Guard. You take the side of Mexico criticizing Bush for wanting NG troops on the border, yet you seem to be against illegal immigration and the hiring of illegal immigrants like a Conservative.

Are you against President Clinton’s NAFTA? I hear buggy whip manufacturers were particularly hard hit. Not only have you missed the gist of my comment, you have also missed the gist of the article you quoted. The point was: tax incentives are against free market forces.

Now that I have established your flip-floppiness, I shall pose a riddle for you. If NAFTA takes jobs away from Americans, why are Mexicans crossing the desert to work here?

    Comment by Gunner | May 18, 2006 | Reply

  13. The gist of your “comment” was to blame everything on the Democrats in your typical spin doctor way. Spin me a communist. Spin me a liberal. Bet you would whore out your mother for an extra vote. You want to make this dirty. Guess what, I’m ready to get in the muck with you. Your kind are through running over the American people shoving crap down our throat and refusing to consider how many families that you harm while making your rich friends richer. How many times do you think you can feed that gruel to the American people and expect them to swallow it?

NAFTA TOOK CORPORATIONS OUT OF AMERICA. Mexicans cross the border to work here because we have a minimum wage. The car manufactor’s know that they can get Mexicans to work much more cheaply in Mexico and other countries to the south. I hope I don’t have to educate you on this again, but I promise to not hold my breath.

I didn’t even know John Birch had a society. Yes, Yes run like hell for the borders and distance yourself from your beloved president. You can run but you can’t hide Gunner. He’s your prez and God knows no matter how hard you hilariously try to change that fact the voters won’t forget come November. You can spin it Clinton’s NAFTA but everyone knows that Bush implemented it and Reagan supported it and Clinton signed it into law. They all screwed up. That’s the difference between me and you. You only see Democrats screwing up, you think Republicans are incapable of making a mistake. Having ideas and opinions may seem like flip-flopping to Republicans, but it is actually what we should all be doing. Knuckle heads will always think that you have to take sides, (Rep-Dem). True thinkers realize that the best ideas come to those who don’t consider politics first. Not like our current Burke County commissioners who can’t fart without spending $50,000 to study it. A bunch of penquins led by Wayne Abele waddling along pooping and eating.

The latest Republican bright idea is to put up a 370 mile fence to protect over 1900 miles of border. Let’s see, who will we get to build a border fence in the desert? Si.

  14. You agree with me again, we should build more walls on the border, and eliminate the minimum wage. When did I ever say that Republicans never screw up? I am just stating facts, its not hard to find a website when you quote it word for word, and then look up the owner of said website.

Looks like the Democrats forced the Senate to water down the bill, then after they reduced it so low that even you disapprove of it, all the Democrats jumped on it and it passed. Even Robert ‘KKK’ Byrd, and Teddy ’scuba’ Kennedy were praising it.

“… our cities will not be flooded with millions of immigrants annually … under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration [will remain] substantially the same,” and “… the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset.” – 1965 Immigration Subcommittee Chairman Edward Kennedy (D)

  18. I’m not really interested in what you find on your biased conservative websites. That may have been what turned your brain into mush in the first place. Or perhaps it was inbreeding, who knows. As for 22 percent supporting Bush, there can’t be that many stupid people left in the country. The way Republicans are distancing themselves from Bush, he couldn’t find 1 in 5 people in his family who support him.
I wouldn’t defend anything Edward Kennedy has done any quicker than you would defend Mary Cheney’s sexual preference. 1965, lets see that was 41 years ago. That was about the same time Dick Cheney had received his 5th draft deferment while 19 year old George W. Bush lite was snorting his first line. The rich have their privileges…
Strom Thurmond did try to help with the black vote that year. According to a 1965 FBI memo Thurmond pressed the agency to go after Martin Luther King who he said was also controlled by Communist. The irony being that Thurmond had long since fathered a black baby. Seems like Thurmond and Gunner have alot in common. Label anyone a commie that scares the hell out of them.

My information came from WABC radio. It’s a proven fact that the liberal media is biased, remember Dan Rather’s forged documents just before the election? Republicans aren’t distancing themselves from Bush, the Conservatives are distancing themselves from Bush. Conservatives stick together, from coast to coast, we live our lives identically based on unmovable principles backed by the Bible. Bush is not a Conservative, he is a social liberal/economic conservative. In other words, he tries to please both sides.

In the future, please try to remember that I am not inbreed, my mother is not a prostitute, my brain is not mush, I don’t have any black babies, and I do not have anything in common with former Democrat Strom Thurmond.

  23. BB, how can you proclaim my prediction wrong before the vote has taken place? Once again you have placed your foot firmly into your mouth. Allow me to correct you once more today:

the US Congress, which makes the country’s laws, is divided into the Senate and the House of Representatives. There was a bill in the Senate that was passed last week. That bill must now be sent to the House of Representatives to butt heads with their markedly different version. A version passed by the House would make illegal immigrants felons while offering no prospects for gaining temporary work permits or citizenship. The outcome of these two battling bills is yet to be determined. You can thank the Conservatives for putting pressure on Congressmen running for reelection for this house bill. Remember that cartoon on ABC back in the 70’s with the song “I am just a bill headed to capital hill”?

Better luck next time, but God bless you for trying.

  24. Thank you for God’s blessing. Coming direct from God by way of you insures me that with my blessed head I can predict now just like you. I predict that the Republicans will follow Bush’s plan like they have the past 5 years. Bush has not vetoed anything since he has been president. Repubs control the house and senate. you can run but you can’t hide. The imperialist Bush will not allow the Republican party to not do the bidding of the rich. It is the rich who prosper from illegal immigation and the rich who will prosper from amnesty.
The House passed the bill first, the Senate passed their version. It is just a matter of time before these like minded neo-cons work out the small details. It’s a done deal.

Comment by Burke Blogger | May 23, 2006 | Reply

  25. Obviously, this discussion is way over your head. All Republicans are not the same and they are not going to follow Bush just because he’s a Republican. If they were all the same, as you falsely claim, then how do you explain the extremely different bills coming from the Senate and the House? You made a prediction Republicans will follow Bush, yet the bill in the House was already voted on and it was completely different that what Bush proposed. Your assumption that the Republicans want illegal immigration to help the rich is ludicrous. It was the Conservative Republican talk radio programs, such as Michael Savage, in the South-Western states that put the illegal immigration issue on the table to begin with. The Democrats are the one that have supported the illegal immigrant marches on May 1st. You don’t even have to go out of the region to name the big liberal activist players in the illegal immigrant protests. The Democrats need illegal immigrants for votes, because they know who to come to for free benefits. Why do you always say, “you can run but you can’t hide.” You have no clue as to the dynamics of Conservative politics. The Christian Conservative Republicans are the ones setting the agendas and going against Bush’s immigration policies causing his numbers to decline. It’s not the democrats driving down Bush’s numbers, because they have always hated the president. Why would we be embarrassed about not supporting Bush on the border issue when we were the ones to make the decision to oppose it? You obviously don’t like anything Bush stands for, so why do you also condemn Conservatives like myself that would like to see things change. Democrats have no other issue, as stated by Howard Dean himself, other that to bash bush. If the Conservatives had been concerned about UFO’s and kittens, then you can bet that’s what the next election would have centered around, but because the democrats don’t have anything to bring to the debate, we shall set the agenda from here on out.

  27. Not all Republicans are Conservatives. If you have read any of my other posts on this blog you would know that I have distinguished between different PMS employees. Its true that Bush had Hispanic support during the last two elections, but now Hispanics favor Democrats who favor amnesty. It’s also true that Conservatives fought hard to get Bush elected because he was a far better choice that Kerry, but now that he has shown his true liberal colors, he has no Conservative support. Rush Limbaugh is in Bush’s pocket, just like the liberal Senate Republicans that pretended to be Conservative to get elected. I don’t think you realize just how powerful the Conservative movement is right now, just look at how we got Bush to back down from the Harriet Myers nomination and the ports deal. And we WILL get the amnesty removed from the Senates bill or we will throw all the bums out of office. The Republicans you have problems with are not true law and order Christian Conservatives. I suspect most will be voted out next election if they refuse to listen to their Conservative base constituents. You have sited Bush’s low poll numbers before, they are not as low as Congress’, Kerry’s or Gore’s. If Democrats win any seats in the House next election, it’s only because Conservatives angry at Bush voted for them. Democrats don’t have any agendas that they can point to that will win them elections. Democrats have no issue other that to bash Bush.

You can try to change the message and shoot the messenger, but the public is tired of being duped by a bunch of snake oil salesmen. It will soon be time to vote. In an election year, be careful of all promises made and any quick fix by those in power. Remember what the elected officials have done over the entire time that they have been in office. Also don’t let them tell you all the good they have done. Elected officials have a way of forgeting their mistakes.

  42. Well Gunner, I waited at the courthouse for an hour. Guess we know who the hen is now. By the way, this site is about the deployment of the National Guard to our borders. I like to call it Bush’s Great Snipe Hunt. Speaking of Bush, you can’t seem to make up your mind. Some days you bash me for bashing him, other days you bash him to. It must be like being married to a woman that is unfaithful… You know what I’m talking about don’t you.

  48. It’s not the stories the liberal press reports on, but what they DON’T report that makes them biased. But just in case you still aren’t satisfied this story is true, here is the audio link.

What was the reason that you have quoted twice from Conservative websites, got tired of thinking mush head? Or is it because the Conservatives are one day ahead of the news and are always right?

    Comment by Gunner | June 5, 2006 | Reply

  49. Some things reported on a conservative website are repeated by other news sources. Believe it or not there are more sources for news than conservative and liberal websites. And there is also a difference in a conservative website and a neo-conservative website. And yes the conservatives ARE always right. If you don’t believe it just ask one.

Look at the one below from Knight-Ridder. And cry.

Republicans in Washington are also worried about how their culture of corruption will affect elections in November.

According to Knight-Ridder, DeLay’s “decision to retire from Congress will do little to help his embattled party retain control of the legislature in November’s elections and won’t erase his image as a poster child for corruption.” [Knight-Ridder, 4/5/06]

  52. ‘Culture of Corruption’ Failed Democrats in House Race

For all the hype and the money spent on the race between former Rep. Brian Bilbray (R) and Francine Busby (D) in California’s 50th District, Busby, in her loss to Bilbray, failed to exceed significantly the percentage won here by John Kerry in 2004. This is significant, because although she will have another shot at Bilbray in November, the turnout should have favored her yesterday, since Republicans had no other races to drive their turnout and Democrats had a gubernatorial primary.

  78. Labor Unions Admit They Are Killing American Jobs

    by Thomas E. Brewton

The president of the United Auto Workers union has acknowledged the stark truth: industrial unions are killing American manufacturing jobs. Unions’ salvation, he says, must come from ukases promulgated by the commissars of a new socialistic, Democratic administration.

In a June 13 article by Jefrey McCracken, the Wall Street Journal reports: “United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger, acknowledging that his union confronts the toughest challenges in its 71-year history, told delegates to the UAW’s leadership convention that solutions to problems such as rising health-care costs or the rash of auto suppliers filing bankruptcy-law protection must come largely through the political process.”

This takes them back to their origin as favored children of the socialistic New Deal.
